Google Business Profile Categories: See What Your Competitors Use

Search your business and we read the categories on real nearby businesses in your category on Google Maps, then show you the ones your profile is missing.

Every number comes with the businesses behind it, so you can check it yourself. Same thing as Google My Business categories, just the current name.

Check My Categories

What it is

A Google Business Profile category tells Google what your business is. You get one primary category and up to 9 additional categories, chosen from Google's own list of roughly 4,000. This free tool checks real nearby businesses in your category on Google Maps — closed listings and solo-practitioner cards filtered out — counts the categories on their listings, and shows you which ones are missing from yours, with example businesses for every count. Google publishes additional categories for only some listings, so the counts are a floor rather than a total.

Free, no signup. Nothing is added to or changed on your Google Business Profile.

Pick your business to see what you get

The categories you are missing. Ranked by how many nearby businesses in your category carry each one.
Counts you can check. Primary versus additional, plus the names of businesses carrying it.
Ten seconds. One live check of real nearby businesses in your category, then the numbers.

How This Tool Works

No account, no connection to your profile, and nothing gets written anywhere. It reads what is already public on Google Maps.

1. Find your business

Type your name and city. We use your listing's own category and location as the search, so the comparison is against businesses a customer would actually see alongside you.

2. We read their listings

Real nearby businesses in your category — closed listings and solo-practitioner cards filtered out — each one's main category and, where Google shows them, its additional categories. Counted once per business, primary kept separate from additional.

3. You get the gaps

Categories businesses like yours carry that you do not, ordered by how common they are, with named examples for every count so nothing has to be taken on trust.

Why Your Google Business Profile Categories Matter

Your category is how Google decides what your business is. It shapes which searches your profile is eligible for and which profile features you get, which is why picking it by guesswork is expensive in a way you never see.

One primary, nine extras

The primary category is your one-line answer to “what is this business”. The other nine describe the rest of what you genuinely do, and a plumber who also does heating work has a real reason to say so.

Categories unlock features

Different categories give you different things on your profile: menus and reservations for a restaurant, services and quote requests for a trade. A category you have not claimed is a set of profile features you cannot use.

Your market, not a generic list

Category lists you find online are copied from each other and go stale, because Google adds and retires categories without announcing it. The businesses ranking near you today are the current list.

What this tool will not tell you

That adding a category will move you up Google. We are not going to claim it, and you should be wary of any tool that does. What we can show you, factually, is which categories real nearby businesses in your category actually carry, and which ones are missing from your profile. The decision, and the honesty about what you really offer, stays with you.

The one real risk

Adding categories for services you do not provide breaks Google's guidelines, can get your profile suspended, and blurs what Google understands you to do. Nine empty slots are not nine free opportunities. Add a category only when a customer asking for that service would actually get it.

How to Change Your Google Business Profile Category

Once you have picked the categories you genuinely offer, adding them takes about a minute.

  1. 1Search your business name on Google while signed in to the account that manages the profile, or go to business.google.com.
  2. 2Choose Edit profile, then Business category.
  3. 3Set the primary category to the single thing that describes your business best, then add the additional categories you genuinely offer.
  4. 4Save. Most edits appear within minutes, though Google sometimes reviews a change first, and changing the primary category on a newer profile can trigger re-verification.

Adding a category is safe to undo. Changing your primary category is the one to think twice about, since it is the strongest single statement your profile makes about what you are.

Frequently Asked Questions

Google Business Profile categories, answered plainly.

What are Google Business Profile categories?

Categories are how you tell Google what your business is. You pick one primary category (the main thing you do) and up to 9 additional categories. Google uses them to work out which searches your profile is eligible to show up in, and which profile features you get — a restaurant gets menus and reservations, a plumber gets service areas and quote requests. They are the same thing as Google My Business categories; Google renamed the product to Google Business Profile in 2021, the categories did not change.

How many categories can a Google Business Profile have?

Ten in total: 1 primary category and up to 9 additional (also called secondary) categories. The primary is the one that describes your business best, and it is the one Google leans on hardest. Filling all 10 slots with anything that vaguely fits is not the goal — every category should be something you actually offer.

How do I see what categories my competitors use?

Use the free tool on this page. Search for your business, and it looks up real nearby businesses in your category on Google Maps — skipping closed listings and solo-practitioner cards — reads the categories on their listings, and counts how often each one appears. You get the category names, how many businesses like yours carry each one, and example businesses so you can check the claim yourself. No signup, and nothing is posted to your profile.

Why does the tool say "at least" instead of an exact number?

Because Google publishes a listing’s additional categories for only some profiles — around 56% in the market we measured. The primary category is almost always visible, the extras often are not. So every count for an additional category is a floor: at least that many businesses carry it, and the true number is higher. We would rather show you a number you can trust the direction of than a total we cannot stand behind.

How do I change my Google Business Profile category?

Search for your business name on Google while signed in to the account that manages it, or open business.google.com. Choose Edit profile, then Business category. You can change the primary category there and add or remove additional categories. Changes usually appear within minutes, though Google sometimes reviews an edit before it goes live, and changing the primary category on a newer profile can trigger re-verification.

What is the difference between primary and additional categories?

The primary category is your one-line answer to "what is this business", and Google treats it as the main signal for what you do. Additional categories cover the other real services you offer — a plumber who also does heating work, a bakery that also serves lunch. A category is a category either way; the difference is that you get one primary and up to nine extras, and only the primary defines the profile features you unlock.

Will adding more categories help me rank higher?

We will not promise that, and be careful with anyone who does. What this tool tells you is factual: these are the categories real nearby businesses in your category actually carry, and these are the ones missing from your profile. Whether adding a genuine one changes what you see on Google depends on your market, and nobody can guarantee an outcome you can hold them to.

Can adding the wrong category hurt my profile?

Yes. Google’s guidelines say categories must describe what your business is, not what you want to rank for. Adding categories you do not genuinely offer misrepresents your business, can get your profile suspended, and muddies what Google understands you to do. Only add a category if a customer walking in and asking for that service would get it.

Is there an official list of Google Business Profile categories?

Google does not publish a browsable list, and the set changes constantly — roughly 4,000 categories exist across all countries, with categories added and retired without announcement. That is why a copy-pasted category list you find online is usually out of date. Looking at what real businesses in your market and country carry right now is more reliable than any static list.

Does this work for Google My Business categories too?

Yes — they are the same thing. Google My Business became Google Business Profile in 2021 and the categories carried over unchanged. If you searched for "Google My Business categories" you are in the right place.

Is this category tool free?

Yes, free with no signup and no card. You can run it on your own business as many times as is reasonable — there is an hourly limit per visitor because each lookup costs us a live Google Maps query, but a business owner checking their market will never hit it.

Where does the category data come from?

From live Google Maps listings data for real nearby businesses in your category. We skip listings that are permanently closed and cards for individual practitioners, then read each remaining listing’s primary category and, where Google exposes them, its additional categories, and count them. Nothing comes from your Google account, and you do not connect anything to run this.
